Minas de Matahambre is a municipality and town in Pinar del Río Province & was declared a National Monument in Cuba. If you're coming from Vinales, as I was, it's halfway on the road to Playa Jutias. It's a small town that was established due to the copper mining in the area. Although I only saw the town out of a moving vehicle window, it didn't seem unlike any other town in Cuba with it's church and common spaces.
These pictures were taken at a Copper mine that was opened in 1916 and was one of the USA's largest sources of copper during that time. It was nationalized by the Cuban government after the revolution but by 1997 the cost of extracting copper from this mine became too costly and it shut down eventually becoming the national monument it is today. Presently Canada's Sherrit Industries is involved heavily in extracting copper and other minerals out of the Cuban ground but not from this mine. Beyond the pictures I've taken, there isn't anything else to see, I hope you enjoy the ones I took. There is no historian or anyone to give you a tour here either.
