Trattoria Roma (restaurant review) Havana

Let me start by saying I don't go to Italian restaurants in Cuba. That isn't entirely true, I do go to and highly recommend 'La Carboncita' in Miramar, Havana. Trattoria Roma is in Miramar as well, as a matter of fact, only 200 meters from where I stay. Therefore, I was curious, wouldn't it be great if I had a decent place close by where I could get a good plate of pasta. So, with that thought in mind, one afternoon when we were in the neighborhood and it was lunchtime, I decided to do just that...have a plate of pasta at this new restaurant to see how good or bad it was. I was pleasantly surprised. Like I said, the place is new. We were the only customers there for this late lunch. The place has an air-conditioned space on the ground floor and a spacious, covered patio on the second floor. It was a no-brainer where we were going to eat since I smoke cigars, the patio. The space on the ground floor is simply decorated, the walls are painted white, the furniture is simple and the walls are adorned with pictures of Rome, Italy. The second floor patio is even more simply decorated with non-fancy tables and chairs....that's it. There was a lot of room on the patio, they could have doubled up on the seating and there still would have been ample room between tables.
I believe the chef-owner is married to an Italian and learned her trade while living in Italy. It's advertised on the menu that they use Barilla Pasta and when the waitress took our order she asked how we would like the pasta cooked...we were off to a good start. They have a decent and reasonably priced wine list as well as beer and soft drinks. I ordered the Spaghetti Bolognese (true test for pasta) while my guests ordered the Bucatini all'Amatriciana. They were both beyond excellent, I would come back for the Bolognese for sure but the Amatriciana was excellent as well. Between Fish and Meat they have a combined 8 dishes, 4 of them are a Filet of Fish done 4 different ways...not a huge variety. They have more Appetizers than they do fish and meat. Where they excel is with the pasta where they have 30 different dishes plus 4 risottos.
The service was nothing to write home about but it was pleasant. The prices were reasonable and that includes the alcohol prices as well. I will definitely come back and recommend to anyone to pay them a visit. I hope they do well, so I have another decent place to have a meal within walking distance.
