If you're looking for authentic Italian cooking in Havana, or the closest thing to it, Nero di seppia is the place for you. Not the cheapest restaurant in the city and far away from all the action but it's consistently great and full of surprises. This past March I brought my Cuban and Canadian families there to form a table of 15 and we all ate like kings. The surprise this time was Burrata; soft fresh Italian cheese, very expensive and not easy to find in Toronto....how did Walter get it in Cuba? I had some of my mother's enormous 'Frittura di Pesce' (fried fish), focaccia, arucola (lettuce) and of course the Burrata....Heaven!! The rest of the table had various pastas (very large), pizzas (thin crust and huge) and main course size salads. Everyone enjoyed their meals and we had plenty to take home.
We sat in one of the private rooms and the service, as always, was excellent, our server was able to communicate with the English speaking guests. More tables have been added outside. No smoking indoors. Walter, the owner, continues to do a great job and I will continue to recommend people to go visit this restaurant.
