Iglesia Corpus Christi (Playa, Miramar, Havana)

There's quite an abundance of churches in Cuba and in Havana they're everywhere. The majority of these churches are of the Roman Catholic faith but there are several other denominations as well. I have a thing about churches in case you, my readers, haven't noticed. It's not to say that I'm a religious person, I appreciate the beauty and the history of the architecture. I try to bring that here to my Blog but unfortunately in many instances I'm unable to find the history of such buildings on the internet and/or in literature on the island. That's the case in this particular church, I can't find any information about it. I've driven by this church many times and have always wanted to visit. One day on one of my trips I decided to walk there from where I stay in Miramar. It's a bit of a hike but I enjoy walking, besides the health benefits you see a lot more that way. I was on my way to the Cubanacan area of Havana to take some pictures of the mansions there and the church would be on the way. Below are some of the pictures I took of the church. I hope one day I can add a post with the history of this building.

  2. Hello! I just came across your website while I was looking for a particular picture from this church. I recently learned my mother was used as a model for the Virgin Mary during the construction of this church. Is there any way of capturing this image so I could save and share with my aunt who at 94 years of age still remembers fondly. In addition, it seems my family also owned the home that was right next door to the church, does this still exist as well and is there a possibility of capturing this image? Looking forward to a response. Thank you so much! Sue

  3. I went to the school from the church called COLEGIO EUCARISTICO. I also lived near, in the same neighborhood. My brother was baptized there, there I did my First Communion and my Cousin was married in the church I was one her flower girls. The School was runned by Roman Catholic Mexican Nuns, and I know the church was built around the early 1940's. The murals inside are unique because they are monochromatic and I also remember that because the beautiful church Murals won an award, but I do not remember the name. The church now is not always open. The building attached to the church was the school and now is being used by the communist government as offices. I was 10 years old when I left my homeland with the Peter Pan Flights sponsored by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Miami and Habana. I wish I can go back to a FREE CUba before I die.

  4. Hi... If you are still interested in the history, especially the beginnings, of this Church, I can supply it. I am Jorge Macías de Céspedes, (religious name Father Maximos) grandson of Carlos Miguel de Céspedes y Ortiz, the one who donated the property (circa 1937) where the Church is built. Members of my family are part of the Stations of the Cross of this Church.
    God bless you,

  5. By the way, my parents were married there, and all of us children and cousins were all baptized there. In fact, Margarita Tabío de Céspedes was the fist one to be baptized in that parish and she is #1 in the baptism registry.

  6. Buenas tardes Jorge, what an exciting post to read this Monday morning, I too would love to read the information. I am the grandaughter of the Corrals that lived next door to the church. My aunt, Silvia Corral who is currently 95 years old has told me stories of this beautiful church including my mother being depicted as the Virgin Mary, painted by, I believe an Italian artist. This was my original quest, to find pictures of my mother, as the Virgin, to show my Aunt. (As well as to have and pass along to future generations, I have 3 daughters and 5 grandchildren) I will be seeing my aunt this coming weekend and will bring your name and this thread to her, it will certainly bring her some happiness and joy. Again, looking forward to any information and pictures. Thank you so much! Grandparents information: Angel y Antonia Corral who had 5 children, Angel, Ernesto, Silvia, Jesus y Orquidea (my mom)
