When visiting Cuba, travelers don't often think of Cuban resort or hotel accommodations as being 5 star, even if some might advertise themselves as such. We seasoned travelers joke about how the star rating system in Cuba doesn't apply. However, on a current trip to Trinidad (Cuba) while doing some research, I discovered a Hotel that doesn't seem to be lying about it's 5 star status. I was able to take a good look at the facilities and one of the Junior Suites under the guise of work. I have to say, it was stunning, they did a great job restoring this 16th century building into the beautiful space it is today. The only drawback is that it doesn't have a pool. Playa Ancon is just 15 kilometers away or $10 cab ride if someone wants to get wet....or you have the shower in your room. I spoke to a few of the guests and asked them how their stay was. Everyone said their room and hotel service were A1 but that they had difficulty getting an internet connection (not the fault of the hotel). The guest facilities included a billiard room in conjunction with computer room and (my favourite) a Smoking Room (or fumoir) with books and a widescreen tv. There's also a meeting room available at no charge. I can't say anything about the food that's served in the main restaurant but nobody I talked to spoke badly of it. WiFi is available (but iffy sometimes) and they have the usual gift shop that's more of a jewelry store. In my opinion and with my experience traveling to Cuba, I would recommend a stay in this hotel if you're looking for luxury, especially in this part of the country. It's located right next to the colonial part of the city, everywhere is within walking distance, it's just a ten minute walk to the Plaza Mayor, a main attraction. If you don't feel like going out, maybe due to rain, the grand piano by the lobby bar is played by someone every night.
The 36 rooms and 4 suites spread over two floors are all air-conditioned & furnished with; a flat screen television, telephone, iPod docking station, bathrobes, hair dryer, iron and ironing board, safe, minibar and balcony or terrace many of which overlook the city or plaza. If you don't like the noise of the bustling city, it's suggested you take one of the rooms situated at the rear of the hotel. As you can see from my pictures, the rooms are nicely furnished and have all the necessary amenities. A Wi-Fi connection is included in all rooms. Only guests ages 15 and over are permitted to stay here and pets are not allowed. I hope this post has been useful to someone who reads it.

The 4 junior suites are similar to the standard rooms but have a separate entrance hall and views of Trinidad’s central plaza. The amenities are the same except that the bathrooms have a bathtub and separate shower.
