My driver (friend) took me to this place when it was too early to have lunch anywhere else, it was just after 11:30am. It's not located in the best part of town but it's not the worst either, just 3 blocks from Plaza de Cristo in Old Havana.....it wouldn't be a place where you would wander around late at night. However, all parts of Havana from the typical touristy corners to the obscure and sometimes a little scary neighborhoods are harboring some wonderfully hip eateries. This has now become my favourite spot to grab a bite to eat in Old Havana. It isn't where I would have a fancy meal but it definitely is the place to chill and relax, where the staff are fun & look like they actually want to be there....what a switch. We'll see if that's consistent as I have to come back several times to try some of the other food on the menu....there's sooo much I want to sample.
You get great value for your money in this restaurant and everything I tried looked and tasted good. The Chicken Croquettes for $3 was a meal in itself, after eating 6 of these (one order) I don't think I would have room for much else. The Tacos Lamparilla were my choice, 3 mini tacos one each of beef, chicken & pork, like the Croquetas, I couldn't eat much more than that. The other dish we had was the dense cornbread topped with sweet tasting pulled chicken and a dollop of cream cheese. We shared everything and left the table satisfied.....food total $14.
The restaurant isn't very big, they have street level, literally the main dining room has a sidewalk between it and the street....capacity 34 people. Plus there is an upstairs which gives off the semblance of catering to cigar smokers (check out the pictures below), they seem to encourage smoking....capacity 26 people, one way or another. The place is a bit of a hangout at night attracting a good mix of tourists and locals. A must visit.
