Prado (Havana) Summer 2016

Prado is a boulevard that runs from the Malecon (ocean) right on up to and past the Capitolio over to the Parque de La Fraternidad and the Fuente de La India. The main part or the one that everyone knows is the piece from the Malecon up to where it opens up to Parque Central, or the other way around.
The work on this road began in the 1770's and wasn't finished until the mid 1800's. The 8 bronze lions (not in the pictures) were added in 1928. There's a wide elevated walkway lined with trees and benches that runs down the middle of the street. The street is lined with some beautiful buildings along with some that are in need of massive repairs & the odd empty shell, an interesting mixture of decaying structures and restored mansions. You'll find a little of everything along this street; hotels, restaurants, bars, cafes, museums, a wedding chapel, dance school..... The promenade is a great place to people watch. Everyone and anyone walks and sits along this section of road. It's used as a playground for schools in the area and the kids come back to play there on their time off. Rollerblading and skateboarding seem to be the new thing that has taken hold over last few years. The smooth marble that's been used to line the walkway makes it perfect for this new activity. On Saturdays artists display their works and the walkway turns into a tourist market.
It's a safe place to come day or night and a great way to kill some time and watch the world go by. Lots of photo opportunities and right next to Old Havana, in fact, the other side of Prado is Centro Havana.
